Session B3
Define Your Risk Appetite, Increase ROI on Your Risk Management Spend, and Influence Your Actuary’s Opinion of Your Reserves

  • Adam Lewis, Senior Principal & Office Leader/Consultant - Oliver Wyman

Most risk managers are tasked with similar goals: improve safety and reduce costs.  However, how does one weigh the tradeoff between reducing insurance costs and increasing exposure to a catastrophic event?  How does one assess whether a new insurance program or cost reduction initiative is worthwhile?  And even if there is a perceived saving, how does one convince her or her carrier’s actuary that savings do exist?  This session will provide both a broker’s and an independent actuary’s view of quantifying the tradeoff in dollars saved vs. increased exposure to a catastrophic event, beginning with the exercise of defining a risk appetite.  This view will then be leveraged in discussing how to measure ROI on insurance spend holistically, and how to identify specific opportunities for improved outcomes and reduced spending.  The session will also include an actuary’s take on how best to make a compelling argument on a meaningful change in experience after a cost reduction initiative is put into place.
